HOW TO: Clean Up Your Facebook Profile

As the number of your Facebook friends and apps you (and them) are using increases, your Facebook news feed and wall can turn into one big mess. It’s nice to communicate with your friends, but if you can’t find useful posts amidst all those silly apps, or your real friends amongst all the unknown people you’ve befriended, it’s time to clean up your Facebook profile.

Facebook offers extensive options for fine tuning what individual applications and people can see or do on your Facebook profile, but if you haven’t been following all the changes (and Facebook likes to change often), you might feel lost in all the options. We’re offering a rundown of the most efficient ways to make more sense of your Facebook experience.

Hide Them From the Feed!

The simplest way to control what shows up in your News Feed is to click “Hide” on an item you don’t want to see. Facebook will ask you whether you want to hide that person or page, once you confirm it, you won’t see anything from them again.

If you want to bring some of the hidden stuff back, don’t worry. Once you hide something, Facebook will warn you with the message “XXX has been hidden from your News Feed. To manage who appears in News Feed, Edit Options.

Now, click on Edit Options and you’ll see a list of all the people and Pages you’ve hidden. From there, you can restore the visibility of the items you’ve hidden, and set some additional options, such as the maximum number of friends shown in Live Feed.

Friends & Lists

Just like MySpace, Facebook is a place for friends. But let’s face it: in most cases, only a small number of your friends on Facebook are good, real-life friends. You’ve also got acquaintances, business partners, coworkers, and if you’re really trigger happy when it comes to friending, a bunch of people you don’t know at all.

Luckily, you can organize them into Friend Lists, which will let you filter your news feed and the chat box. The process can be a little tedious, but trust us, it can make a huge difference.

We’ve got a detailed article explaining how to create and manage friend lists on Facebook, and for the most part, it’s still accurate. However, Facebook changed its layout after the article was written, and some details about how lists are displayed and managed have changed, too.

Lists are now displayed under Friends in the Facebook homepage; click on it to see all the lists you’ve created. Furthermore, to edit lists, click on Account – Edit Friends. From there, you can add or remove friends from your lists, delete lists or create new ones.

To use lists, simply go to your homepage, and click on a list; you’ll only see news items created by the people you’ve added to that list. Perhaps even more importantly, the lists extend to the chat box. Once you’ve created one or more lists, you’ll see that the chat box now displays them separately. Click on Friend Lists; from there you can choose which lists do you want to see in the chat box. Fantastic if you have a lot of friends, but you only chat with a handful.

Apps

Dividing your friends into lists should help you organize and clean up your profile tremendously, but it still doesn’t rid you of all the apps your friends are using, some of which keep popping up on your wall. For example, if you’re not interested in Farmville, you probably don’t want to see how your friends’ crops are doing.

Again, it’s possible to fine tune which apps can do what to your profile, and we recommend doing this not only for the sake of clarity, but also for the sake of privacy and security. Click on Account – Application Settings, and choose Show – Authorized from the drop down menu. You’ll probably be amazed at how many apps you’ve authorized; the list can become huge over time.

There’s a couple of ways to deal with these apps. If you see an app you really don’t need, you can simply remove it by clicking the x next to it. This is a bit drastic, however, as you can also change the settings for each individual application. Click on Edit Settings; from there, you can deny the app to “Publish recent activity (one line stories)” to your wall (under Additional Permissions). You can also choose whether you want the app to be located in your Bookmarks, and you can limit the visibility of that app’s tab on your profile.

What Now?

After you’ve cleaned up your apps, you’ll see a lot less clutter on your Facebook profile; however, bear in mind that this is an ongoing process. After a while, you’ll likely authorize new apps, and your profile will once again become cluttered with stuff you don’t really need to see on a daily basis. The best way to deal with it is to do regular maintenance of your Facebook profile every couple of months.

Still, if you’ve followed the instructions in this article, your Facebook is now a different place – more organized, less cluttered and generally more enjoyable. We hope it helped! If you’ve got any additional tips on how to clean up your Facebook profile, let us know in the comments!

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Beta Leaked, Screenshots Surface

An early build of Windows 7's first service pack has been leaked, leading to thousands of downloads on a whole host of various torrent Web sites.

As with every Windows operating system (OS) release, improvements and fixes often arrive in the form of a service pack, and only last month the Windows team discussed the upcoming Windows 7 SP1 release in a blog post. The team detailed that the first service pack would feature a number of minor updates for the popular OS. However, it is worth noting that the Windows team did not mention a final release date for the completed service pack .

This leaked beta, which was compiled on March 27 and identifies itself as build number "6.1.7601.16537.amd64fre.win7.100327-0053," gives an incomplete indication as to what progress is being made on the upcoming service pack, and as such should not be seen as a complete product.

Early reports from those who have gone ahead and installed the beta have already surfaced. Downloaders say that the Windows 7 installation procedure is considerably faster than the service pack installation experienced when using Windows Vista.

Microsoft has not officially announced when the final first service pack will be available. If you have tried the 'unofficial' beta be sure to let us know in the comments.

More images of the installation process can be found on Geek Smack.

eBay Launches One Stop Shop For All Things Fashion

EBay has never been known as the premier fashion mecca in the online retail world. Yes, you can find designer goods on the auction site, but the validity of these goods has been tarnished slightly by reports and subsequent lawsuits of fake designer items being sold on the site. But the e-commerce giant is hoping to change this. eBay recently launched FashionVault, a site that sells designer clothes and includes Gilt Groupe-like flash sales on designer items. And today, the company is launching eBay Fashion , a “new enhanced shopping destination for clothing, shoes and accessories on the world’s largest online marketplace.” It’s sort of like a one-stop-shop for all things fashion on eBay.

The site promises more advanced and customized features to surface and showcases the new, vintage, branded and designer merchandise included on the 19 million average daily listings on eBay. New features include enhanced browsing capabilities, with a dedicated “Fashion Tab” in the top navigation on the eBay homepage. Users are given the choice to shop by boutique, brand, category, similar items and trends.

Other new functionality includes a “More Like This” feature that will surface other apparel and accessories items that are similar in color, shape, pattern and more; and tailored boutiques for categories like Women’s Clothing, Men’s Clothing, Women’s Shoes, Men’s Shoes and Handbags. eBay is also soliciting tips and advice from fashion insiders and stylists that will curate shopping lists and looks from the Marketplace.

It seems that this new fashion-focused site is more than just a push towards getting fashionistas to visit eBay. eBay recently sectioned off its classified site to this could be representative of a strategy towards fencing off their marketplace sections to create niche retail and content portals.

comScore: Android Market Share Continues To Gain On The iPhone

comScore has just released its latest report on smartphone marketshare, and the trend we saw last month has continued: Google’s Android is gaining quickly on the iPhone, as Palm and Microsoft’s shares continue to dip. The report compares smartphone market share averaged over the three-month period ending November 2009 against the three months ending February 2010.

The report concluded that 45.4 million people in the United States were using smartphones in the period ending in Feb. 2010, which is a 21% increase over period ending last November. RIM still has a strong lead over the field, with 42.1% of the smartphone market share, and it rose by 1.3% over this period. But the most interesting story is the rapid rise of Android, whose share grew 5.2%. Apple’s share has remained stable, with a .1% drop.

It’s important to note that while Android is clearly growing quickly, it still has a long ways to go to match Apple’s mobile user base. Apple’s iPhone OS is also used by the iPod Touch (and now, the iPad); Android still hasn’t been deployed on any popular devices that aren’t phones.

Microsoft to Launch "Pink" Smartphones on April 12?

Microsoft stirred up some speculation on Monday with invitations to a mysterious press event on April 12. The invitations, sent by snail-mail in circular packages, feature the message "It's time to share," along with an invitation to the mystery event.

According to the author of the WindowsPhoneSecrets Blog, Paul Thurrott, as well as an unnamed CNET source and an unnamed ComputerWorld source, the event will be centered on the unveiling of the new Microsoft smartphone platform code-named "Pink."

Two new phones, code-named the "Pure" and the "Turtle," are also expected to be unveiled at the event. Both phones were designed by Danger--the makers of the T-Mobile Sidekick handset--and manufactured by Sharp. Images of the Pure and Turtle were leaked in September of last year, and specs were leaked just last month. According the most recent leak, which came from Gizmodo, the OS on both phones is, like Windows Phone 7 and the Zune OS, based on Windows CE.

The new phones are targeted at a younger crowd--the same crowd at which the Sidekick was initially targeted. While the Sidekick focused more on texting and less on media, the new phones are expected to feature lots of social networking support for the Twitter-and-Facebook crowd, as well as the Zune music service.

The new phones are not expected to run Windows Phone 7; they're expected to run a modified version of the Danger OS (with Windows CE as the core). ZDNet also suggests (based on the Tweets of custom rom maker Conflipper) that there are two other (CDMA) phones in the works, code-named "Lion" and "Pride." All Pink phones are expected to be launched on the Verizon network, with the rumored tagline: "Make your network more social."

Some pundits are also speculating that Microsoft may also debut its is-it-real-or-not dual-screen tablet, dubbed the "Courier," just a week after Apple's iPad release. However, it's still most likely that we'll just see new phones. Thurrott believes so, too, writing on his blog that the upcoming event is "not a Courier event."

Microsoft has done a pretty good job of drumming up speculation with its mysterious event invitations, but Apple still seems to be pulling ahead: Apple announced Monday that it will be giving the public a sneak peek of the iPhone OS 4.0 on April 8, just four days before Microsoft's event.
